KUCHING: Furry animals are not spared from the flash floods that have hit Kuching badly today.

In a video posted earlier on social media, it was seen that the Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) animal shelter in Mile 7, Kota Sentosa, was affected by the disaster this morning.

Dogs stuck in the shelter are being moved outside as the water level rises.

Hundreds of dogs were released from the shelter, but sadly, two dogs were found drowned, one of which was a year old and another was around eight months old.

When contacted, SSPCA chairperson Datin Dona Drury Wee said that the flood was the worst ever hitting the shelter.

“According to our staff, the water level was up to their collar bones — it is the worst ever,” she told the New Sarawak Tribune.

She also appealed for public and volunteer help for the cleaning process in the shelter, but not as soon as today because some of the roads in the city leading to Kota Sentosa are still flooded.

“We also need cash donations from the community to help us maintain the shelter and its activities,” she added.

She then said that as of 11am, the floodwaters had receded.

Anyone who wishes to donate may transfer cash donations to the SSPCA’s CIMB account at 8005274525.
