Wuhan virus cases surpass SARS, nearly 12,000 infected

KUALA LUMPUR: China reported 46 new deaths from the novel coronavirus Friday, increasing the total fatalities in the country to 259 so far.

The Chinese Embassy in Malaysia in its Facebook posting today said 45 new deaths were recorded in the outbreak’s epicentre in Hubei Province while one occurred in the Chongqing Municipality as of Friday midnight.

Also on Friday, China reported 2,102 newly confirmed cases among which 268 were severe cases, bringing the total confirmed cases to 11,791.

“As of 24:00 on Jan 31, The National Health and Health Commission had received a total of 11,791 confirmed cases (each one case decreased in Jiangxi, Shaanxi and Gansu Province after verification), among which 1,795 severe cases, 259 cases of death, and 243 people had been discharged from hospital after recovery,” it said.

There are also 17,988 suspected cases so far.

At present, 136,987 close contacts have been tracked, 6,509 people were released from medical observation on the same day and 118,478 people are currently receiving medical observation.

Meanwhile as at 1.15pm local time, the live update at thewuhanvirus.com puts the figures at 11,950 with 259 deaths and 27 countries affected. – Bernama
