GEDONG: The Sarawak government plans to give a year-end bonus to Sarawak civil servants this year.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said instead of giving bonuses for the Hari Raya Aildifitri celebration, Sarawak would opt for year-end bonuses as the money could be used for children’s schooling next year.
“Giving bonuses only on Hari Raya Aidilfitri seems unfair to other festivals such as Gawai and Chinese New Year.
“We have many festivals…we celebrate Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Gawai and I think we must be fair to all festivals.
“That’s why the Sarawak government decided not to give bonuses during the festival, so let’s spend wisely,” he said during a press conference after the compensation cheque presentation ceremony for the Gedong Mini Isthmus master plan project here on Wednesday (April 12).
To him, Abang Johari said spending on schooling was more important.
“If they in Semenanjung decides to give bonuses, that is their decision. If we have more income this year, let me give it at the end of the year and this is fair to all the communities.
“This can also help parents in terms of school expenses.”
Abang Johari added that he planned to give a bonus of at least RM700 to Sarawak civil servants at the end of this year.
