Yecheon glory awaits S’wakians

SEOUL (South Korea): Six Sarawak archers are among the 10 participants who will carry Malaysia’s challenge at the Yecheon 4th World Tradition Archery Festival here.

According to Malaysian delegation leader Datuk George Siah, they will compete with more than 90 archers from around the world, including from the host country in several events.

The challenge will start today with the category between nations while the individual category will take place tomorrow.

Each category offers a total prize of 1 million won. The categories include 30m, 50m and 30m moving target events.

According to Siah, Sarawak’s challenge will be led by Abdul Halim Sharkawi, 47, Mohd Azhar Azahari, 30, Faizaluddin Roslan, 34, (Kuching), Mohd Redzuan Zaini, 31, Saiful Rezza Mat, 29 (Sibu) and Abdul Taib Abdul Rani, 53 (Miri).

Siah, the vice president of the Dove Cavalry Club of Japan was optimistic that his men would be able to create a surprise.

“We have achieved very good results last month at the World Cavalry Archery Championships and won several medals.

“We will strive to repeat the same feat in this championship,” he said.

He added that this was Sarawak’s first appearance at the festival.

He hoped his charges will strive to achieve the highest points and create success, not just experience.

At the tournament in Sokcho, also in South Korea last  August, a Sarawak archer won silver. –  Rudi Affendi Khalik
