MUKAH: The younger generation should know the meaning and significance of July 22.

Penghulu Henry Lee Liong Ing said it was indeed appropriate that former chief minister, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, declared July 22 as a public holiday in Sarawak in 2016.

According to him, the date helped to bring awareness of Sarawak’s past and its history to the people.

“As Sarawakians, we, especially the younger generation, should know more about our past leaders and their contributions in achieving independence for Sarawak in the 1960s,” he said via WhatsApp on Saturday (July 18).

Lee, a former teacher, stressed that the younger generation should know more and understand well the meaning and significance of July 22.

He said this was because generally, many youths had very little knowledge of Sarawak’s history, especially on contributions and struggles of past leaders.

July 22 was the day, 57 years ago in 1963, when the British colonial government officially and fully surrendered its administrative power to Sarawak to be ruled by her own people.
