SEMATAN: Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the Youth Communication Camp (YCC) is a good meeting platform for participants of various races.
“From the beginning, I have advised the programme organisers to ensure that inclusivity is applied in the recruitment of participants by involving students from SJK, religious schools, mission schools and so on,” he said.
“This is because, often we see in schools that Malays only mingle among themselves and likewise the other races.
“Therefore, the effort to gather students regardless of race in a programme like this gives them the opportunity to assimilate,” he said at the 11th YCC organised by Kuching Toastmasters Club at Putra Sentosa Camp, here, yesterday (June 5).
As such, Abdul Karim who is YCC patron added that his ministry will continue to support the implementation of similar programmes.
“In addition to uniting races through this sort of programme, we can also see that this camp is able to hone students’ talents from the aspect of communication skills and so on,” he said.
Thus far, YCC has involved around 2,000 students from 50 schools in the districts of Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Bau, Mukah, Lundu, Sematan and Serian since the programme was first held in 2012.
This year nearly 300 attendees comprising 180 participants (Level 4 to Level 6) from 21 schools around Sarawak, 60 facilitators and 30 teachers are engaged in the three-day, two-night camp.
The main focus of the camp is on public speaking, building team spirit, empowering leadership skills and talent show.
