MIRI: Firemen from Lopeng Fire Station here on Saturday night managed to dissuade an Indonesian youth from jumping off a shopping mall here.

The restaurant worker, who was in his 20s and hailed from Pontianak, Indonesia, tried to jump off the building which was at least 15 feet high at about 9.50pm.

Firemen from Lopeng Fire Station rushed to the spot as soon they received an emergency call from a member of the public.

The firemen took about 30 minutes to calm the youth down and dissuade him from jumping off the building.

After bringing him down with the help of a ladder, they surrendered the youth to the police for further action.

Miri District Deputy Police chief, Superintendent Stanley Jonathan Ringgit confirmed that the police had detained the youth for further investigations.

“It is not known yet why he tried to jump off the building,” said Stanley.
