MIRI: Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau has urged more youth to register as blood donors.

He pointed out that blood donation was even more essential during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) blood drive campaign held at Bintang Megamall at Jalan Bintang on Saturday, he applauded the association for helping the Miri Blood Bank.

“Let me share with you all some statistics from Miri Hospital on blood donation programmes in Miri.

“In 2019 and 2020, Miri Hospital used up 8,682 and 7,375 pints respectively. The blood collection in 2020 decreased by 1 percent (96 pints) to 8,638 pints from 8,734 pints in 2019,” he revealed.

“This is very good compared to other hospital blood banks which suffered a 20 percent fall in blood donations during Covid 19,” he explained.

Dennis thanked the cooperative, dedicated and wonderful community of blood donors in Miri.

“In 2020, 61.8 percent (5,337) donors were males and 38.2 per cent females (3,301). Our donors are in the 17-65 age group, with most of the donors in the 30-34 range,” he said.

On Saturday, 127 blood donors out of 163 who registered successfully donated their blood.

Also present were Miri Hospital`s director Dr Jack Wong Siew Yu, Miri Bomba zone 6 chief Supt Law Poh Kiong, Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri District Blood Donor Recruitment Committee deputy chairman Cr Karambir Singh, NSJA president Andy Jong Wan Joon, Shun Shen Lee Trading Sdn Bhd branch manager Jimmy Yii Jiun Hieng and Bintang Megamall Miri event manager Allen Wong Lung Hing.
