SIBU: Youths from Sibu Jaya distributed free face masks at Sibu Airport on Thursday as part of a community programme supported by the developer of this booming township.
The group, led by Ting Yong Jung, distributed about 500 masks to visitors arriving at the airport.
The-28-year-old youth leader said he was motivated to take the lead when Amcorp SibuJaya (formerly known as Distrepark Sdn Bhd) said it would support community programmes undertaken by youths from the township.
“As I am working in SibuJaya, I felt perhaps we could do our part as well and decided to approach the developer to back our initiatives,” he said.
Ting hoped to work with the business community in SibuJaya to hand out more face masks in the township to help people cope with the worsening haze.
“If all of us were to chip in and do our part, I am confident that we will be able to make life more pleasant for everyone, not just during this hazy period, but on a day-to-day basis as well,” he said.
Ting recently led a group of youths to help out at the recently concluded SibuJaya Fun 5 Fiesta here.
“I feel it is unfair and irresponsible for us to just sit back and let the developer do all the work when it comes to community events. It is important for the local community to rise and be part of the event and help. After all, the event was organised for us and it is more meaningful when we shoulder some of the responsibilities too,” he said.
