KUCHING: Sarawak recorded no new positive Covid-19 case Wednesday, with the total number of cases in the state remaining at 556.

The state Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement said, one Covid-19 patient had recovered and discharged from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Wednesday.

“Thus far, the total number of Covid-19 cases which have recovered and been discharged is 526, or 94.6 percent,” it said.

The committee reported 18 new person-under-investigation (PUI) cases with seven cases awaiting laboratory results.

As of Wednesday, there were 13 cases undergoing treatment at hospitals, of which 12 were in SGH and one in Bintulu Hospital.

Meanwhile, 83 person-under-surveillance (PUS) cases checked into hotels Wednesday to undergo quarantine, bringing the total number of PUS at 19 hotels statewide to 1,699 while 14,039 PUS had completed their quarantine period.

SDMC noted that Sarawak would be moving from the conditional movement control order (CMCO) to the recovery movement control order (RMCO) as of Wednesday, adding that the enforcement of the RMCO was under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342).

“However, in welcoming these relaxations and the gradual reduction in positive Covid-19 cases, compliance to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and social distancing must be continued and cannot be compromised. This is important if we want to break the chain of transmission,” it stressed.

It pointed out that the movement control order (MCO) and CMCO had managed to effectively curb the spread of Covid-19 in Sarawak, attributing this to the community’s high level of commitment in following the SOPs set by the government.

SDMC said the State Health Department (JKNS) would continue to monitor the development of cases and ensure that preventive measures were implemented throughout the RMCO.

“The RMCO period from June 10 to August 31 is a very important phase as a determinant for the next Covid-19 control strategy,” it said, adding that Sarawak’s community played a vital role in ensuring the success of this strategy.

Besides emphasising social distancing during the RMCO to prevent a second wave, the public should avoid non-essential movements and instead utilise virtual methods of interaction.

The committee advised individuals travelling across districts to take preventive measures and practise strict social distancing during their journey and upon their return, especially when they had family members in high-risk categories such as children, senior citizens and those with disabilities (OKU).

“The public must continue to be committed in following the SOPs and staying cautious always. If there are those experiencing symptoms of cough, sore throat, sudden loss of smell or taste, weakness, or feel that they are at risk, immediately undergo a health screening at the nearest screening centre,” SDMC advised.
