LUNDU: A lorry driver escaped a fiery death after the front part of his 10-tonne lorry burst into flames along Jalan Lundu-Bau yesterday (Feb 21).

It was reported that the lorry laden with sand was on its way to Bau from Lundu before the incident around 10.40am.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the lorry driver managed to get out to safety.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that firefighters from Lundu station were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call.

Upon arrival, the fire had caused 40 per cent damages to the front of the lorry and the extinguishing deed was performed with water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant.

The fire was brought under control at 11.13am and overhaul works were carried out to ensure that there was no risk of re-ignition.

Once the situation was safe, the team ended the operation at 11.20am. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
