SIBU: The Bawang Assan branch of Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) has declared full support to whoever Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) fields in the Bawang Assan state seat.

According to political secretary to Premier Romeo Christopher Tegong, in the next election, they must intensify their efforts and strategies to ensure GPS wins the seat.

“We will support whoever GPS places in Bawang Assan. As PBB vice president Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has said, we don’t want to rock the boat.

“Bawang Assan is a traditional seat for the Sarawak United People Party (SUPP), so a SUPP candidate will likely be placed, and we are firm in our decision to support them,” he said.

The PBB Bawang Assan chairman was asked by reporters during a press conference yesterday (May 1) if his branch would support a GPS candidate from a component party.

Romeo also stressed that the Bawang Assan area has been left behind in development under the opposition.

“We need to ensure the GPS candidate wins. We have our strategy, but we would not reveal it here.

“The PBB Bawang Assan branch has 3,724 members, and during every election, we contribute more than 3,500 votes for GPS candidates,” he added.

Romeo also urged the women and youth wings to work hard to ensure the GPS candidate’s success.

Meanwhile, on the dissolution of Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) and its members to join Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), he welcomed the move and hoped they could work together for GPS’ benefit.

“We welcome PSB members joining PDP because it is good for Bawang Assan. It means less opposition. However, we hope they are sincere.

“We do not want them to join PDP and cause quarrels during elections. We’ve learned from experience, such things happen,” he added.

The Bawang Assan assemblyman is Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) senior vice-president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, who joined PDP after PSB was dissolved last March.
