KUCHING:  Limkokwing University of Creative Technology has launched the Limkokwing Film Academy, a film-based centre that aims to train youths to build a career in the film and content industry.

Its senior vice-president for Industry Empowerment Datuk Raja Aznil Raja Hisham said the film and content industry is huge with many subsectors that are able to provide opportunities to a wide range of talent.

Limkokwing University Senior Vice President for Industry Empowerment Datuk Raja Aznil Raja Hisham speaking to youth on the Limkokwing Film Academy.

“I urge youths, especially those who have an interest in any aspect of the arts to venture in this industry,” he said during the launch at the university’s Presidential Gallery in Cyberjaya Thursday.

He said the film and content industry can be in dance, writing, fashion, graphics, acting, music, and also technical areas such as special effects, animation, and motion capture.

He stressed Limkokwing Film Academy aims to inject 1,000 skilled talents into the content industry workforce within this year.

“To give this mission a kick-start the Tan Sri Limkokwing Foundation is offering 100 scholarships to achieve this objective.

“The whole purpose of this exercise is to provide a lifeline to those in the B40 category where we feel there is a great amount of talent but without the means to unlock and claim their rightful place in the world of industry,” he pointed out.

He said those who have just sat for their SPM can take up the two-year programme where they graduate with the Film Academy certificate which is TVET equivalent.

“The second stream is purely for those who are already in the industry.

“There are people out there who have been deeply involved in the film industry and they would have started at a low level and moved up as they gained the skills to do the job,” he said.

He said however they lack a certificate that testifies to their capability.

“They can enroll for a two-day intensive workshop or a three-month course and graduate with a skill-specified certificate,” he said.

Therefore, he encourages parents to motivate their children to acquire the skills that will get them into mainstream creative careers that they will surely enjoy.

“All they need to bring with them to succeed in this field is their passion and their willingness to work hard, especially those young people who are not academically inclined but are tremendously talented creatively.

“The content world needs them…We need more young story tellers to visualise the beauty of this country and the kind of people we are that the world has not discovered yet,” he stressed.
