11-month jail for stolen bikes

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a local man to 11 months in prison for possessing two stolen motorcycles last week.

Jalil, 30, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali, to two charges read out by an interpreter.

On the first count, Jalil and his accomplice, who remains at large, were charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code, in conjunction with Section 34 of the same code, for possessing a stolen Yamaha Lagenda motorcycle owned by a 57-year-old woman.

For the second count, Jalil faced charges under Section 37(1) of the Sarawak Minor Offenses Ordinance 1958 for possessing a stolen Demak motorcycle without reasonable grounds.

He committed both offenses at an unnumbered house in Kampung Matang around 9 am on February 29.

Syarifah Fatimah sentenced Jalil to eight months in prison for the first charge and three months for the second charge.

According to case details, the complainant discovered that the motorcycle, registered in his brother’s name and parked in front of a supermarket, was missing around 9.15 pm on February 24.

Despite efforts to locate it, the motorcycle was not found, leading the complainant to suspect theft.

A police report was filed, resulting in Jalil’s arrest during an operation named ‘Ops Lejang’ at a house in Kampung Matang.

The man, attempting to flee through the back door, was apprehended by the raiding team, which also recovered two motorcycles believed to be stolen.

Investigations revealed that Jalil had in his possession stolen property and could not provide a reasonable explanation for possessing the items.

ASP Arman Ibrahim prosecuted, while Jalil was unrepresented.
