119 exhibitors confirm career fair participation

KUCHING: The Sarawak Career and Training (SCaT) Fair to be held from March 15 to 17 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), is a platform to provide sufficient information on education and career opportunities to the public.

Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Assistant Minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the fair is expected to offer 2,609 job vacancies and attract some 20,000 visitors.

“To date, we have received confirmation from a total of 119 exhibitors who will be participating in this year’s event.

“These include 36 exhibitors from the industries (job providers) such as Shell, Petronas, Sarawak Multimedia Authority, Samling Management Sdn Bhd, Longi (Kuching), Press Metal Sdn Bhd, Sacofa Sdn Bhd, Sarawak Energy Berhad and others.

“There will also be eight representatives from the financial aid providers (Yayasan Sarawak, Yayasan Khazanah, Mara and PTPTN) and 65 from various institutions including Unimas, UiTM, UCTS, Curtin University, Swinburne University of Technology, vocational colleges and others.

“Apart from that, 10 government and government-linked agencies will be joining us at the event,” he said at a press conference at BCCK here yesterday.

Jointly organised by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research (MESTR) and Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (Tegas), the eighth SCaT Fair aims to enhance the employability of graduates or youths.

for the future and to nurture interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) among school children,” said Len who is also Tegas chairman.

He added that visitors to the fair would also be able to participate in a series of talks and seminars with topics revolving around employability, entrepreneurship, digital economy, TVET (technical and vocational education and training), motivation and innovation.

Among the talks expected to take place are Gearing Up for the Job, Smart Agriculture through Sustainable Farming, Make Up for Success and Unleash Your Talent.

“A special forum for youths themed ‘Youth Speak Up’ will also be held. It aims to foster enhanced repercussion and resilience in youths so that they will be more prepared and mature in making decisions as well as more aware of their own identities.

“This year, we will have more activities related to TVET and STEM,” he said, adding that a programme known as Go4TVET that promotes live demonstrations of technical and vocational skills would also be part of the event.

A cosmetics make-up challenge, a photography contest and a “Soccer Robot Cup” would also be held.

According to Len, Tegas would be organising “STEM Playground”, an interactive family-friendly exhibition which aims to spark interest among students in STEM.

Members of the public are encouraged to come to this event as it offers opportunities for networking and form partnerships between school-leavers, graduates, training providers, higher learning institutions and potential employers.

SCaT 2019 is a free-entry event, with the opening ceremony on Mar 16 which is expected to be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
