MIRI: Nineteen persons including seven children were made homeless after a fire destroyed their seven-door wooden quarters in Kuala Baram here Thursday night.

Two vehicles parked near the quarters were also destroyed.

There were no injuries but the victims, believed to be workers of a sawmill, were left with only the clothes on their backs.

The fire did a quick job of the wooden structures, giving the victims no time to think of what to save except themselves.

A team of 15 firefighters from the Miri and Lopeng fire stations were deployed to the scene after responding to a distress call at 10.46pm.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Supt Law Poh Kiong when contacted said the firemen managed put out the fire by 11.23pm.
