MIRI: Nearly 2,000 Kayans in the Northern Region on Saturday night converged at a leading hotel here for the ‘Peng Pahlung Pahu Kayan’ fundraising dinner.
The gathering was organised by Persatuan Kayan Sarawak (PKS) led by its president and Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, in his message at the event, highlighted a few key issues that required the immediate attention and actions of the Kayans.
The government of the day, he added, was given an overwhelming mandate in the last state election to carry out the responsibility of governing the Sarawak for another five years.
“This is a heavy responsibility for the government to execute but that is the trust that has been mandated by the rakyat to the government and its public officials,” he said.
Abang Johari pointed out that this mandate had to be translated into enhanced services to the people, especially in the rural areas, to upgrade basic infrastructure like schools, clinics, water and electricity supplies, roads and bridges.
“The Kayans in Sarawak have always been a force to reckon with and they shall continue to be so to ensure that the tall order of bringing about changes to the rural areas can be successful,” said the chief minister.
Also present were Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin; Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting; Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Assistant Minister Rosey Yunus; and director of the administrative unit of the Chief Minister’s Office Datuk Anthonio Kahti Galis.
