22 items under price control scheme

MIRI: With Gawai and Hari Raya celebrations just around the corner, the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) has listed a total 22 meat and vegetable items under its price control list for 30 days from May 21 until June 19.

During the period, the 22 items listed are not to be sold at prices higher than that set by the Ministry (KPDNHEP).

The Ministry had previously listed 18 items under the scheme.

Among the items in the list are live chicken (RM6.70/ kg), standard chicken (RM8.50/kg), super chicken (RM9.50/kg), and imported lamb (RM27/kg).

For Grade A, B and C eggs, it costs 39 sen, 38 sen and 37 sen, respectively.

Meanwhile, the ceiling price for tomatoes has been set at RM7 per kg and Indian shallots at RM6 per kg.

On Friday evening (May 24), Senator Alan Ling who is also secretary of Pakatan Harapan Sarawak accompanied by Miri KPDNHEP chief Joe Azmi Jamil made a brief visit to Imperial Hypermarket Miri at Jalan Post to inspect prices of the controlled items included the scheme.

Ling when met later reminded traders to display pink price tag on every item listed under the scheme during the stipulated period.

Overall, he and Joe expressed their satisfaction with the visit.

“I have found that the ceiling prices have been complied with,” Ling said.

Meanwhile, Joe said action would be taken against traders who failed to adhere to the regulation under the scheme as stated in the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act, 2011.

“Our enforcement officers will be around to conduct regular inspections,” he said.

Under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act, 2011, those found to be selling the price control items at higher prices can be fined up to RM100,000 or be jailed up to three years or both or a compound of up to RM50,000 upon conviction. Companies can be fined RM500,000 or a compound of up to RM50,000 upon conviction.

Joe added that traders who failed to display or use the pink price tags could be fined up to RM10,000 while companies can be fined up to RM20,000.

For complaints on traders’ failure to display pink price tags on the price control items, consumers can channel information to the Ministry’s portal: e-aduan@kpdnhep.gov.my or call its hotline centre at 1800 886 800.
