SIBU: A total of 317 hawkers from the Sibu Central Market have undergone Covid-19 screening tests held at its premises today.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh stated that the screening involved all the hawkers there.

“The screening for tomorrow will be for food and beverages hawkers, goods sellers, crab sellers and other food sellers,” he said.

Ting also said that the full list of those who came forward to undergo the screening test for today has not been finalised.

“We are targeting 300 hawkers to come for the screen test every day,” he added.

Meanwhile, the temporary closure of the Sibu Central Market has been extended for another five days until Feb 19 due to the increasing Covid-19 positive cases at the premises.

Initially, the market was closed from Feb 8 to Feb 14 and was supposed to reopen on Monday.

Ting said the extension of the closure was decided after receiving a report from the Sibu Division Health Officer on the increase of positive Covid-19 cases here.

“The council’s priority is the health and the safety of all hawkers and the general public.

“SMC will review the operating status of the market no later than this Friday considering the swab test taken by each of the hawkers,” he said.

He also requested the cooperation of all to prevent and stop the spread of Covid-19 here.

For the record, Sibu Central Market houses more than 1,100 hawkers.
