MIRI: A total of 41 projects under the first phase of the effort to repair and restore dilapidated schools in the state have been approved, involving a sum of RM350 million.

“Eight projects have been completed, 31 are ongoing and two are in the early stage of construction,” said Deputy Education Minister II, Dato Mohamad Alamin.

In total there will be three phases involving 147 projects with the cost amounting to RM1billion, he added, referring to a federal government allocation for Sarawak.

On Tuesday he declared open two blocks in Sekolah Kebangsaan Anchi at Piasau that were built at a cost of RM6.5 million under the federal government allocation for dilapidated schools in Sarawak.

Construction began on June 4 two years ago and took about 18 months to put up a four-storey classroom block and a preschool building fully equipped with built-in furniture.

On another note, Mohamad Alamin disclosed that Sarawak’s lawmakers are now allowed to enter schools and give assistance as the directive that barred them from entering schools has been lifted.

He said the decision was made recently by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MoE).

“YBs are now allowed to enter schools and are welcome to contribute and give assistance to schools for students’ well-being,” he said.

He added that they were not barred from entering schools as such but due to the COVID-19 situation at that time, the prohibition was necessary as the Ministry did not want to put students at risk of infection.

Also present during the event were Pujut assemblyman cum Mayor Adam Yii and Sarawak Education Director Datu Dr Azhar Ahmad.
