SIBU: The police department here will still function as usual despite 10 percent of its 500 personnel going on leave for Gawai and Hari Raya celebrations.

Sibu deputy police chief Supt Martin Koo said this to reporters after launching “Ops Selamat” at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman here yesterday.

“We still have 90 per cent of the personnel on duty during the two celebrations. There is enough manpower for us. Besides traffic, we are also monitoring other crimes such as house break-ins,” he said.

Koo also advised those who would be away for the celebrations to inform the police.

“We will patrol your area once you inform us that you would be away.”

On “Ops Selamat”, the state level operation is being carried out from May 29 until after Hari Raya in Kuching, while at the district level, it was launched yesterday.

“The operation is to remind motorists to drive safely to their destinations,” Koo added.
