KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) extended festive cheer to 500 KMC flat residents through the Caring Community Programme.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng thanked CCK Fresh Mart and Borneo Eco Fish for their contributions, which ensured each recipient received both chicken and fish.

He said the goal was to make the festive season special for everyone, regardless of their background, reinforcing the city’s motto of ‘MBKS Cares’.

“This programme is not exclusively for the Chinese; it includes Iban, Malay, and other communities. Our aim is to bring them together to celebrate the festive season, allowing everyone to experience the joy of the festivities.

“I hope that in the coming year, we will be able to engage more companies interested in corporate social responsibility (CSR) to contribute generously to our community,” he said.

He told reporters this after attending the Caring Community Programme in conjunction with Chinese New Year at KMC Flat Multipurpose Hall at Jalan Ban Hock today.

Beyond the festive distribution, the mayor highlighted the importance of understanding the community’s needs firsthand.

He stressed the council’s commitment to going beyond paperwork, actively engaging with residents, and addressing their concerns.

The approach, he added, involves gathering feedback, listening to the community, and demonstrating genuine care.

“For those truly struggling, we’ve initiated another programme to support them. Because what’s the use of having fish or chicken without rice? We will be providing additional assistance later, with surplus supplies for nearly 100 individuals.

“Moreover, some are unable to afford their rental costs. In our office, we’ve established a positive practice. For those facing challenges with rental expenses, we step in to sponsor them.

“My staff and I are committed to assisting, despite the rentals being quite affordable. It reflects our belief that society should embody more care and love,” he said.
