PUTRAJAYA: A total of 524,100 people in the country migrated in 2018, according to the Migration Survey Report. Chief Statistician Datuk Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin who commented on the report said the main reason for migration in 2018 was to follow other family members at 44.2 percent, career (24.3 percent) and moving homes or looking for a new environment (22.4 percent).
According to him, the number of migrants in 2018 had decreased by 112,900, compared to 637,000 recorded in 2016.
The Malaysian migration survey is conducted every two years to supply the main statistics of migration according to demographics and socioeconomic factors.
Mohd Uzir in a statement yesterday said nearly two-thirds, or 60.8 percent of the migrants were those involved in intra-state migration.
“The highest percentage intra-state migration in Malaysia is from town to town, although it decreased to 66.9 percent in 2018 from 71.0 percent in 2016,” he said.
According to Mohd Uzir, the number of migrants who moved to other states increased to 28.5 percent, up 3.6 percent from 24.9 percent in 2016.
Selangor is the main migration destination with 9,500 migrants moving to the state last year.
According to the survey, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur registered the highest number of migrants leaving in 2018, with 22,500 people. – Bernama
