A TOTAL of 88,000 trees have been planted in several Total Protected Areas (TPAs) in the state as of October this year.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said these tree have been planted in an area of 85 hectares in the TPAs such as Samunsam, Samajaya, Similajau, Taman Tun Ahmad Zaidi, Piasau, Bukit Lima and Kuching Wetland.

“This is part of Sarawak Forestry Corporation’s (SFC) rewilding project to restore degraded areas in the TPAs,” he said.

Awang Tengah, who is also the Second Minister of Natural Resource and Urban Development, was delivering his ministerial winding-up speech in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.

He said that other than Sarawak’s commitment to the Malaysian Greening Programme through the planting of 100 million trees until 2025, the Sarawak government through the Forest Department of Sarawak (FDS) is committed to planting 35 million trees through the Greening Sarawak Campaign.

“As of Oct 31, a total of 29,295,498 trees have been planted and is the highest planting record in Malaysia,” he said.

In addition to this, he said a special programme organised by the FDS was the Le Tour de Restoration 2.0 and it saw the planting of 60 hardwood belian trees in each division.

“The programme is also held in conjunction with the 60 years of Sarawak’s independence.

“Furthermore, this also provides an opportunity for the younger generation to get to know Sarawak’s heritage tree better,” he added.
