SERIAN: Local Sarawakians make up about 94 per cent of the teachers allocated to the state, said Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Minister Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

He said the figure has already exceeded the Malaysian Ministry of Education’s (MOE’s) target.

“Currently, 94 per cent of the teachers are from Sarawak, and the remaining six per cent are from other states.

“This means we have already achieved more than the original target which is a 90:10 ratio (placement of teachers from Sarawak to this state),” he told reporters in a press conference after officiating at the Career Briefing Programme as an Educator at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tarat here today.

He said that there hasn’t been any notification of the entry of new teachers into Sarawak by the MOE thus far, despite efforts by them to start this year with a 5,000-plus teacher increase.

“The Education Service Commission (ESC), which oversees it, and the Ministry of Education and Culture’s standards are both met in this regard (the hiring of teachers).

“Recruitment is based on MOE’s request, which means that if there is a request, the ESC will run advertisements and offers to candidates based on data,” he said.

On the same note, Roland emphasises that his side, at the grassroots level, is merely waiting for the Ministry of Education and Culture’s decision on the processes for Form 6 students voting in the 15th general election.

As such, he believes that the MOE has a good plan based on the country’s constitution and legislation.

Earlier, the inaugural programme was organised by ESC Secretariat Sarawak Branch together with the MEITD involving a total of 200 Form Five and Upper Sixth students.

The programme aimed to give students their first exposure in order to prepare them for employment as well as information about the teaching profession if they decided to pursue it as a career.

Also present were the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Innovation and Talent Development Azmi Bujang, the Secretary of the ESC Secretariat Sarawak Branch Faizah Edrus, the Serian District Deputy Education Officer Ensnat Sauari, and the principal of SMK Tarat Goh Chui King.
