95 new animal bite cases reported in Sarawak

KUCHING: The Sarawak State Health Department stated that 95 new cases of animal bites have been reported last Sunday, namely 27 cases in Serian Division, three in Sri Aman, 64 in Kuching and one in Samarahan.

Of these, 82 cases involved pets, namely dogs 57 cases and cats 25 cases, while 13 cases involved wild animals or strays, that is, dogs (five cases), cats (seven) and bat (one).

This brings the cumulative number of animal bite cases that took place from April 1, 2017 until last Sunday to a total of 2,202 cases, and as many as 911 people have received the anti-rabies vaccination, the department said in a statement here.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak Veterinary Services Department (JPVS) in its statement said it had held a vaccination programme in Kampung Taie, Serian last Sunday and as of 3.00pm, 98 dogs had been vaccinated.

A cumulative total of 30,305 pets comprising 22,663 dogs, 7,597 cats and 45 other animals were vaccinated.

The rabies outbreak in Sarawak has so far claimed five lives while another victim is seriously ill at the Sarawak General Hospital.
