SIBU: The Kanowit Phase 2 water supply project is expected to be completed by March next year after taking into account the availability of construction materials and the approval of Extension of Time (EOT) for the project.
Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi said despite the slight delay, he had reminded the contractor to stick to the new specified time frame.
“The Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) has also been directed to monitor the implementation progress together with the consultant and resident engineer in charge,” he said in a statement following his site visit yesterday (Aug 6).
The RM63.5 million project is divided into three components.
The first component involves the construction of the Durin booster pump station and the second component is the construction of a high-level water tank with a capacity of 3.5mld in Bukong Jagoi.
“The third component is the installation of a 55-km pipeline from the Salim Sibu Water Treatment Plant to Kanowit,” he said.
Upon completion the project is expected to increase water pressure and improve water supply reliability in Durin, Kanowit and the surrounding areas.
Additionally, he said the project will also enhance water supply to the Nibong Tada and Machan areas, as well as the Sibu Jaya area.
Accompanying Julaihi were MUT Deputy Minister (Utility) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Machan assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong, Ngemah assemblyman Anyi Jana, MUT permanent secretary Jafri Lias, JBALB director Chang Kuet Shian and Sibu Water Board general manager Itin @ Abdul Malik Abdullah.
