KUCHING: The Sarawak government will assess the implications of new requirements to bolster the public service sector in the state.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said various plans would be formulated in line with the review of terms and conditions for civil servants in the country to be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on May 1.
He emphasised the importance of incentivising civil servants based on performance targets and hinted at potential innovative ideas.
“I have instructed the State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, to analyse the implications of the new terms.
“Furthermore, I have ideas that may be better than what will be announced on May 1,” he said when officiating at the Premier Department Ramah Tamah 2024 event held at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly Autrium today.
The event was organised by the Sarawak Implementation Monitoring Unit (SIMU) and Administrative Unit (UP).
Abang Johari advocated for the ‘Jawatan Berasaskan Caruman’ (JBC), or contribution-based approach, over the Civil Service Pension Scheme, citing its benefits, including facilitating transitions from the public to the private sector.
He expressed confidence in this approach’s ability to create a competitive service system and provide greater prospects for civil servants’ futures.
“With JBC, civil servants have access to move from the public sector to the private sector, and the service conditions are better than the pension scheme.
“So, this is an innovation in terms of the service scheme that we want to provide to Sarawak civil servants,” he added.
The ceremony witnessed the distribution of contributions from the Malaysian Government Servants’ Welfare and Sports Council (MAKSAK) Cares and MAKSAK Sarawak Women to 50 deserving recipients from the Premier’s Department, along with entertainment performances and lucky draws.
Among those present were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, as well as state Cabinet ministers and deputy ministers.
