SARIKEI: The state government is considering to develop a new township in Kampung Seberang area here as part of its town expansion plan.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the plan would bring long-term benefit to the people.
He emphasised that it was one of the ways for the government to make sure that more infrastructure and economic opportunities were created.

“We will continue with this plan as long as the state continues to be governed by Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS). Thus, I want the people to continue to unite and support what we plan to do,” he said during the town hall session
organised by Sarawak Volunteers at Dewan Sentral here yesterday.

He also revealed that the existence of the Agro Park would strengthen Sarawak’s position as a food exporter while enabling the state government to improve the
living standards of the people.

“The 314-acre park is a modern agriculture project developed under GPS’ initiatives.  “As of now, 50 percent of it has been developed.

When it is completed it will be equipped with the latest technology available,” he said, adding that the park is located at Baji and will be operated by Sarikei residents. “Aside from the park, we are also introducing the breeding of freshwater fish in Sungai Sian.

“We are taking this step due to the huge potential of the local agricultural sector here. In fact, the demand for certain products is quite high,” added the chief minister.

Abang Johari also stressed that the state government is actively developing the state’s infrastructure to facilitate the development of its agricultural sector.

“Other infrastructure implemented by the government includes the construction of bridges to
connect the coastal road,” he said.

The chief minister went on to assure Sarawakians that the state would not go bankrupt because it has a good financial plan in place.  About 1,400 people from Sarikei attended the town hall session.
