KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has given his assurance that 155 resolutions in the 7th Sarawak Cultural Symposium will be deliberated under his administration.

He said the resolution covered the areas of culture, heritage, education, land, digital economy and business, civil service, women and youth, politics and religion involving seven ethnic communities, namely, Bidayuh, Chinese, Malay, Melanau, Iban, Indian and Orang Ulu.

“I can assure you that we are taking those resolutions and they will be deliberated professionally.

“One thing that I would like to highlight here is the issue of the Native Court. I have directed Mahkamah Adat to look into the possibility to upgrade the Native Court equivalent to Syariah Court and the Civil Court,” he said in his speech at 7th Sarawak Cultural Symposium dinner here, tonight.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari urged the young people to nurture their talents in digital innovations as to help the state government to think of ways to document digitally and preserve the aspects of the state’s cultures.

He said, at the same time innovative and creative ways would be adopted to disseminate and present the diverse cultures in the form of films, online videos, clips, caricatures and etc.

“It is my hope that our young people can reinterpret our cultural heritage in this digital world so that we can adopt and adapt to the challenges happening now,” he said.

Tonight is the final day of the symposium where all the seven ethnic communities gathered together to celebrate the unity and social harmony of Sarawak.

From August to November last year, the respective ethnic associations have organised their own symposium to discuss a myriad of concerns and challenges under the theme ‘Managing Culture in the Digital Age’. — Bernama
