KUCHING: Four academicians came together yesterday to talk about historical events in Sarawak to members of the Sarawak State Library, Petra Jaya.
The “Sarawakiana Talk: Sarawak in History” touched on several events that transpired in the state long ago.
It was held in conjunction with the three-day Sarawakiana Carnival 2019 which took place from Oct 4 until today in collaboration with the annual What About Kuching (WAK) 2019 programme.
The talk was moderated by New Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak chief operations officer Rudi Affendi Khalik while the speakers were Dr Suffian Mansor from Univeristi Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Dr Nordi Archi from University Malaysia Sabah, Buhigiba Mohd Bustaman from Institute of Teacher Education (IPG), Batu Lintang campus and Dr Nadrawina Isnin from Univeristi Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Samarahan campus.
In his topic “Antara Bendera dan Bedil: Sarawak dalam Pembinaan Identiti Geopolitik Baharu”, Suffian talked about how the first white Rajah, James Brooke expanded Sarawak.
In his topic “Kolonialisme dan Nasionalisme Sarawak”, Nordi touched on colonisation and nationalism in the state.
Buhigiba, in his topic “Sempadan Bahagian Ke Lima, Sarawak” discussed Limbang in relations with Sarawak, Malaysia and Brunei between 1884 and 1984.
In her topic “Faktor Kepimpinan dan Gender Di Kalangan Wanita di Sarawak” Nadrawina touched on the involvement of Sarawak women in politics between 1940 and 2019.
The talks, which began at 9.30am and ended at noon, attracted 60 participants. It ended with a lucky draw.
