KUCHING: A local man, believed to have a history of mental illness, was given new bail of RM2,000 with two local sureties after he pleaded not guilty to robbery charges on Wednesday (June 23).

Sessions Court Judge Maris Agan ordered Chong Lian Hung’s bail to be reduced after an application was made by his lawyer Abdul Rahman Mohd Hazmi that his previous bail of RM20,000 with two sureties as well as a deposit of RM5,000 was quite heavy.

Abdul Rahman applied for the reduction of the bail as the accused had a history of mental illness (schizophrenia) since 2013 and this had caused the accused to lose his consideration and commit robbery.

The court set re-mention of the case for July 8.

The 45-year-old accused was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 20 years as well as a fine or whipping.

He was accused of stealing a Toyota Hilux (plate no QBC 1767) belonging to one Thang Su Tjeng.
