SERIAN: The solemn funeral rites for Leading Seaman I JJM Joanna Felicia Rohna, who tragically lost her life in a helicopter crash on Tuesday in Lumut, Perak, took place at 11:25 am today at Kampung Engkeroh cemetery near Tebekang here.

The final ceremony commenced early at 9 am at the residence of the deceased’s husband’s family, where individuals from all walks of life gathered to pay their respects and share in the collective grief.

Serian MP Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem and the esteemed Lt-General (R) Datuk Stephen Mundaw, the first Dayak commander of the Malaysian Armed Forces, were among the dignitaries present to offer condolences to the grieving family.

In a poignant display of solidarity, veterans, members, and officers of the Malaysian Army (TDM), Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), and Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) also came forward to bid their final farewells.

Representatives from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) were also in attendance, underscoring the profound impact of Joanna’s untimely departure.

Joanna’s mortal remains were solemnly transported to the cemetery, a journey of approximately two kilometres from her place of residence, in an RMAF hearse.

Eight pallbearers, led by Sarawak RMN Chief Petty Officer Mahathir Sait, carried the casket, their sombre expressions reflecting the weight of the occasion.

The burial ceremony commenced with a heartfelt prayer, after which the casket was interred with utmost reverence, accompanied by full military honours.

The RMN Burial Assistance Group, composed of 17 officers and 61 other ranks, supported by 11 military vehicles and military equipment, paid tribute to their fallen comrade.

Commodore Ir Franklin J Joseph, representing the RMN, conducted the poignant flag presentation to the grieving families, symbolising the nation’s gratitude for Joanna’s service.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin reassured the bereaved families that the Federal Government would extend initial assistance of RM10,000 to each family of the fallen RMN members.

In addition, the ministry has established a special fund to facilitate public contributions for the affected families, recognising the profound loss they have endured.

The Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) has shouldered all expenses related to the final journey, including chartered flights and funeral arrangements, as a compassionate gesture to alleviate the immense burden carried by grieving families.

“This is a step towards easing their hardship,” stated the Defence Minister briefly, acknowledging the deep sorrow and challenges faced by the bereaved.

Tragically, Joanna was one of ten members and officers who lost their lives in a collision between two helicopters during the 90th TLDM Fleet Parade rehearsal, held in conjunction with the RMN Open Day at the Lumut Base.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 23rd April, casting a sombre shadow over the event meant to celebrate the maritime accomplishments of the Malaysian Armed Forces.
