Adoption project ends on high note

LIMBANG: Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) has officially ended its adoption of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Medamit here. TM Sarawak general manager Jafer Sadig Abdul Lathiff on Thursday officiated at a ceremony which marked the end of the school’s three-year adoption project.

Also present were Limbang District Education Officer Mat Zinan Wahid and SMK Medamit principal Raja Manikam. Speaking at the event, Jafer said TM adopted SMK Medamit in August 2016 under the fifth phase of TM School Adoption Programme in collaboration with partner Pintar Foundation.

“Throughout the three-year adoption period, TM with strong support from Pintar Foundation, assisted SMK Medamit in planning and organising various academic, co-curriculum as well as leadership programmes based on the current educational needs.

“TM also provided Internet access for the school via the Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) Satellite throughout the three-year period. “With an allocation of more than RM220,000 since 2016, we are indeed happy and glad to see that SMK Medamit has benefitted from this programme, as reflected in the school’s improved performance in academic and co-curriculum activities.

“We hope with the provision of the various facilities and exposure to the training programmes, we will be able to encourage the school as well as the surrounding community members to adopt a more digital lifestyle as we move towards a Digital Malaysia,” he said.

SMK Medamit has recorded encouraging academic accomplishments since 2016. Its School Average Grade or Gred Purata Sekolah (GPS) for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) improved from 5.97 in 2016 to 5.22 in 2018.

Throughout the three-year adoption period, one student from the school successfully obtained 8As, seven students obtained 7As, six students achieved 6As, and ten students achieved 5As.

Meanwhile, for Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3), a total of two students achieved 7As, one student achieved 6As and two students got 5As throughout the three-year adoption period.

SMK Medamit also won numerous competitions at the district, state and national levels, especially in art and culture, as well as sports and other co-curricular activities.

“In support of the school’s special interest in  cultural dance, TM also partially sponsored costumes, accessories and musical instruments to its Kelab Seni & Budaya Gerini Tari,” said Jafer.

“We are happy to see that the club members have been practicing hard and achieved great success in various national as well as international arts and cultural festivals, such as Borneo Art Festivals and Festival Tugu Budaya Etnik Sabah,” he added.

So far, TM has adopted 15 schools around Malaysia with two active schools, namely SMK Paya Rumput, Melaka and Sekolah Pendidikan Khas Pekan Tuaran, Sabah.  Throughout the years, TM has allocated more than RM2.4 million for its school adoption programme.
