SIBU: A sports utility vehicle (SUV) which landed on its side along Jalan Sibu-Tanjung Manis, was destroyed in an afternoon fire yesterday.
It is not known how the car landed on its side near Jalan Bawang Assan junction.
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firemen from Sungai Merah station were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call around 2.30 pm.
By the time the firefighters arrived, the car was completely engulfed in flames.
After putting out the fire, the team carried out flushing works to clear the oil spill on the road.
It is learnt that the driver was rescued by passers-by and taken to a clinic nearby before the firefighters arrived.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
