Amok man in viral videos arrested

KUCHING: A man has been arrested in connection with two viral videos showing him running amok at a mosque, and performing silat while wielding a machete at a Buddhist temple, here.

In the first video posted by the suspect, he took issue with the fact that the mosque in Jalan Pinang was in compliance with Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP) guidelines.

The video later depicted the man heading towards Gita Police Station with a machete by his side.

In the second video, the man was seen performing silat with a machete in front of a Buddhist temple near Carpenter Street. He later proceeded to try to hand over the machete to bystanders.

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the 34-year-old man was arrested around 1pm on Tuesday (Aug 10).

“Two investigation papers were opened under Section 427 of the Penal Code and Section 6 (1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

“If convicted, he can be sentenced to imprisonment or a fine or both,” he said on Wednesday (Aug 11).

ACP Ahsmon added that the suspect was also charged for riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

“The suspect will be remanded today (Aug 11) for further investigation.”

The suspect also had priors related to drug offenses. “However, the result of the initial urine test found the suspect negative for drug use.”
