Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Sarawakian students studying abroad are urged to return and serve in the state after finishing their studies to assist in developing Sarawak as a new frontier in the new economy.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the training and knowledge gained during their studies can be applied to develop Sarawak together with the state government.

“The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government has introduced the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 where we have identified to have an economic direction that will move the state GDP growth of six to eight percent and increase our economy income from RM130 billion to RM280 billion in 2030.

“This is a very challenging number to get but I believe our Sarawakian can go through towards the new economy.

“And I have the confidence and trust that our Anak Sarawak, if they are being challenge, they can look for effective solutions,” he said in his opening speech during the Sarawak Agenda Townhall with Premier held in conjunction with the Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2022 at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) here today.

Abang Johari also said that the state has sent students to higher learning institutions to study specific courses needed by the state to later contribute to Sarawak’s new economy.

“Recently, I have reached a discussion with Japan giant’s companies, such as Sumitomo, and Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd who confirmed their investment with us in Bintulu worth US $600 million.

“This means, there are job opportunities for Anak Sarawak in technology, biochemistry and other courses needed to change our state economy.

“In PCDS 2030, we sum up all of our human resources and I believe our Anak Sarawak understand that we need all of this to move towards developing the economy.

“And also with resources that we have, and we can store carbon on our land, I do believe that our economy is bright,” he said.

He pointed out that unity amongst Sarawakians is of utmost importance.

“GPS will fight for our rights, and we will defend our rights as one of the states in Malaysia. We have achieved some success in our Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) negotiations, and with that I am also confident that our Anak Sarawak will achieve their own success, and what we do now is to determine the basis towards a new economy.

“In the next DUN sitting next month, the state will introduce the new law for the setting up of the state sovereign wealth fund for the wellbeing of the next generation, and this is what the state government is doing right now,” he said.
