KUCHING: Batu Kawa will see another new development with the further transformation of the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry site at Jalan Stephen Yong, Batu Kawa here.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the lake at the quarry site would be beautified like the now famous Tasik Biru in Bau.

“Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari has approved and allocated RM10 million for this project and work is expected to commence this year,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.

Sim, who is also the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president and Batu Kawa assemblyman, said after the completion of the project, the lake would become a potential tourist attraction in Batu Kawa.

“The RM10 million will include the initial development of a multi-purpose hall and innovation hub, and phase by phase, other developments will come in.

“All these will further provide job opportunities for the locals in Batu Kawa and definitely, will spur more economic activities here,” he said.

Sim said an architect would be appointed soon.

Earlier, during the Chinese New Year gathering co-organised by SUPP Batu Kawa and Stapok branch at the Stapok Community Hall yesterday, Sim in his opening remarks said once the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry transformation project was completed, the site would be known as the Ang Cheng Ho Lake.

“If there is a need for another better name, we’ll consider that too,” he said.

He said as the Batu Kawa assemblyman, he would continue to fight to bring more development for the area.

“Although the development fund for the Batu Kawa area covers RM20 to RM30 million per year, it is still not enough.

“But I believe we’ll see Sarawak becoming prosperous beginning this year and with that prosperity, we will be able to bring more development to the state,” he said.
