THE issue of living standard of Sarawakian was always near and dear to the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, the former Head of State.

Balai Ringin assmeblyman Datuk Snowdan Lawan said the late Taib had showed remarkable and distinguished leadership in steering Sarawak’s progress.

“I had the benefits of witnessing of how Sarawak had grown from an agricultural state into a thriving and bigger economy with manufacturing and many infrastructures development throughout the state.

“With his vast experience both in the state and also at the federal level, Taib had brought physical, economic, social and religious development to uplift the standard of living of the people of Sarawak.”

He said this when debating in support of the motion of appreciation to the former TYT on Wednesday (May 8).

During the debate, Snowdan also recalled his encounter with the late Taib during the beginning of his political career which was greatly influenced by the late Chief Minister and TYT.

“I remember vividly on one occasion he gave me a fruitful advice about my political journey.

“He murmured to me, saying: In politics you must know when to accelerate and when to put in the brake, and move with the flow.”

Snowdan pointed out that Taib’s politics of development has had great impacts on the life of the people.

The healthy financial position of the state treasury with more than RM30 billion reserves now are the results of cumulative efforts initiated by the late Taib.

“On the political front, Sarawak was fortunate because the late Tun Taib had built a formidable “wall” by not allowing entry by UMNO into our state.

“We will cherish his legacy forever,” he said.
