KUCHING: Sarawak Skills now provides consulting services to help industry reduce waste, improve product quality, and increase productivity.

“With this integrated system, information and knowledge will be delivered smoothly through the entire supply chain and will enhance cooperation between industry, manufacturers, suppliers and customers,” said chairman of Sarawak Skills, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Abdul Aziz Dato Husain.

His speech was read by first vice chairman of Sarawak Skills Management Council and general manager of PETRONAS Sarawak, Zulaihi Mohd Mantali, during the 24th Sarawak Skills and i-CATS University College convocation yesterday at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here.

He said that Sarawak Skills is also actively engaging industry players to produce a competent workforce.

“For the oil palm, oil and gas industries, Sarawak Skills will provide the workforce with relevant skills to address the shortage of skilled manpower by offering short-term courses in related fields,” he added.

Therefore, he said with the establishment of the Industry-driven Consultative Committee led by the industry at the end of last year, Sarawak Skills is expected to play an important role in resolving the problems faced by industries in Sarawak in providing a skilled workforce.

“Sarawak Skills also plays an important role in convincing industry to adapt automation towards IR 4.0 and this institution is confident that it can be a liaison between industry and policy makers/government,” he pointed out.

Aziz who is also the Pro Chancellor of i-CATS University College, expressed pride in Sarawak Skills’ management’s ability to quickly adapt to technological changes relevant to the era of the IR 4.0 by offering programmes and courses that are in line with today’s industry needs. 

“Among them are short-term courses and certifications of Cyber Security, Internet of Things (loT), Big Data, Vertical Integration, Cloud Computing, Drone and others,” he said.

The convocation saw a total of 697 graduates from various academic and skills programme receive their scrolls.

The graduates comprised 300 Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) recipients, 103 Malaysian Skill Diploma (DKM) recipients and 11 Malaysian Advanced Skills Diploma (DLKM) recipients.

For academic programmes (i-CATS UC and l-CATS Miri), there were 58 graduates from degree programmes (Software Engineering and Business Administration), 214 graduates from various diploma programmes, and 11 graduates from the Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme.

Meanwhile, about 22 graduates will receive industry awards from 15 Sarawak Skills members, namely, Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC), Samling Group of Companies, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Yayasan Sarawak, PETRONAS, Murata Toko Electronic (Sarawak), Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Sarawak Information Systems (SAINS), One Medicare, Senari Synergy, ASTEEL Resources, Serba Dinamik Holdings, Sacofa, Trac-Wheels (M), Konsortium Bumi Consultants & Services and KKB Engineering.
