Awang Tengah in Seoul to woo investments

KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan held a meeting with Cho Ju Ik, Executive Vice President, Hydrogen Unit of Posco Holdings during his official visit to Seoul on Aug 1.

According to a press release issued on Wednesday (August 2), the meeting aimed to strengthen ties with Posco Holdings which has been actively involved in various projects in Malaysia.

“Of particular interest is Posco’s exploration of investments in the emerging energy sectors, including hydrogen and CCS, which align with Sarawak’s PCDS 2030 vision.

“Awang Tengah extended a warm welcome to Posco’s interest and expressed hope that the company will consider investing in projects within Sarawak,” it said.

Posco Holdings, a steel-making company headquartered in Pohang, South Korea, has showcased its global prowess as the world’s sixth-largest steelmaker, with an impressive output of 42,000,000 metric tons of crude steel in 2015.

It is the world’s largest steel manufacturing company by market value in 2010 and ranked as the 146th-largest corporation on the Fortune Global 500 list in 2012.

Presently, Posco operates two integrated steel mills in South Korea, located in Pohang and Gwangyang.

Also present during the meeting were Ambassador of Malaysia to the Republic of Korea Datuk Lim Juay Jin; Deputy Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh; Advisor of MINTRED Sarawak Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datuk Zaidi Mahdi; Acting Permanent Secretary of MINTRED Sarawak Dzulkornain Masron; Director of Land and Survey Department Datuk Abdullah Julaihi, CEO of Regional Corridor Development Authority Datuk Ismawi Ismuni; COO of Sarawak Energy Berhad James Ung, Vice President Upstream of PETROS Jeremy Wong, and Director of Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) Ruhizam Idris.
