SIBU: The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has denied allegations that Automatic Safety Awareness System (Awas) cameras have been installed in the state.

Sarawak JPJ deputy director Noraini Mohd Nawi.

According to Sarawak JPJ deputy director Noraini Mohd Nawi, no Awas or formerly known as Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras, have been installed in Sarawak.

She said the installation of cameras is an ongoing process in Malaya.

“There are no Awas cameras in the state. So far, there is no decision yet.

“Strictly speaking, the installations will be done in stages,” she said after officiating at the state-level ‘Ops Khas Kenderaan Komersil’ at the Stapang enforcement station, KM40, Jalan Sibu-Bintulu yesterday (Sept 26).

Recently, a viral social media post alleged that multiple Awas cameras had been installed at traffic light intersections in Kuching, Serian and Bintulu.

It also claimed that the cameras were installed along the roads in Kuching, Serian, Sarikei, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.
