KOTA SAMARAHAN: A total of RM10 million ceiling allocation was approved to upgrade SK Tambey which has been categorised under the dilapidated school category.
This was announced by Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali during his work visit to SK Tambey in Kpg Tambey here yesterday.
“From my visit to the school today, the distance is not far from Kuching city but the school’s condition needs immediate attention.
“We do have development allocation for dilapidated schools every year and this year, the plan is to develop 116 dilapidated schools throughout Sarawak. However, SK Tambey was not included and I have referred the matter to the Economic Affairs Ministry, Economic Planning Unit (EPU) and Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU), and they are ready to provide an allocation for the year 2019 with a total of RM10 million.
“This will depend on the actual cost of the project when the process is made with integrity and by using the latest development concept that can minimise cost.
“I want basic facilities such as classrooms, computer labs, resource rooms and others to be complete so that the learning and teaching system will be conducive for the children in this area,” said Azmin during an interview.
He also suggested to handover the 66 projects to develop dilapidated schools in Sarawak to the State’s Public Works Department (JKR).
“There are 116 dilapidated schools in Sarawak this year and 50 schools have been handed over to State JKR as an implementor agency, while the remaining 66 schools will be handled by the Education Ministry.
“The total allocation is RM443 million. State JKR has the skills and expertise to develop all 50 dilapidated schools. The remaining 66 schools handled by Education Ministry have various problems and some have been delayed.
“Therefore, I suggest that all development project on dilapidated schools be handed over to State JKR as the implementor agency because they have the expertise in developing the schools,” said Azmin.
