Batu Niah Fire and Rescue station project has resumed

MIRI: Work to complete Batu Niah Fire and Rescue station which was halt due to financial constraint in 2016 has resumed in the middle of this month.

According to local fire chief, Supt Law Poh Kiong, the work which began on April 17 is expected to be completed within eight months (by December 16).

“This morning (yesterday), the department’s northern office handed over a letter of resumption of the project to the contractor, HH BUILD Construction Sdn Bhd,” said Law.

The remainder of the work costs RM2.3 million.

“It will definitely benefit people in Suai-Sibuti and Bekenu,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.

The project comprises a single-storey building for the fire station, four Class F quarters, training tower and a store.

Firefighters are at the scene today dousing at the peat fires.

On the smoke haze here, Law said his men are still putting out bushfires near the Sarawak-Brunei border in Sungai Tujuh.

Despite yesterday’s heavy rain that lasted for almost one hour, firemen from Miri and Lopeng fire stations remained on standby.

The peat fires along the border that have been going on since Tuesday have burned 120 acres.

Persistent firefighters.

Reportedly, the peat fires have been creeping into Kuala Baram’s Ladang Borneo Agro Plantation Industrial that have 15 Agro workers helping to fight the menace.

As at 3pm yesterday Miri Air Pollutant Index (API) reading was at 68 (moderate).
