MIRI: Road users were reminded to be extra cautions while using the roads, especially during festive seasons.

Minister for Transport Sarawak Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said, they should practise safety culture  and comply with the safety regulations for their own safety and not for the sake of enforcement agencies such as policemen or the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

“When you put on your seat belt, you do it because it is crucial for your own safety and not because there are policemen or JPJ in front checking on you,” he told local media here yesterday after distributing road safety goodies to road users during a road safety campaign in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya celebration.

He pointed out, that road safety is everyone’s responsibility and not solely shouldered by enforcement agencies.

“Our goal (road safety campaign) is to reduce accidents and fatalities; we aim to educate and promote safe driving behaviour with the hope to see a decreasing pattern in number of road accidents each year,” he pointed out.

Thus, he added, to start inculcate road safety culture at young aged is very much important.

“That is why, the Transport Ministry of Sarawak (MOTS) is planning to revive traffic games in the state to help develop and inculcate road safety rules to school children,” Lee said.

At the moment, he added, the ministry is looking at upgrading six traffic gardens across the state to organise traffic games.

Meanwhile, the number of road accidents this year in Miri Division for the period of January until April increased 15.7 per cent or 975 cases as compared to 842 in 2022.
