KUCHING: The public is urged to be vigilant when visiting the Kuching Food Festival and be aware of pickpockets within the area.

Responding to two recent snatch theft incidents on August 2, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng stated that the council has heightened security measures around the MBKS City Hall vicinity.

“The police have successfully apprehended one of the three culprits who operated as a team. I am confident that we will be able to get the other two.

“In light of this situation, the Royal Malaysian Police have allocated 12 personnel to provide security for the premises each night.

“There is also a station just outside the MBKS City Hall where the public can easily lodge reports, if necessary,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after officiating the Grand Finale of the MAGGI Jom Masak, Menang & Kongsi Bersama 2023 campaign here at Vivacity Megamall here today (August 5).

Meanwhile, Wee called upon the public to lodge complaints through appropriate channels, such as the designated complaint and service counters at the premises, rather than resorting to sharing complaints on social media.

He said that the council welcomes any constructive criticism as it aids in the betterment of the upcoming festival and benefits future visitors.

“Sharing complaints on platforms like Facebook may lead to oversight. If the public has suggestions regarding facility upgrades, service improvements, or concerns about food quality, we encourage them to utilise the designated complaint avenues,” he said.

On a separate note, he revealed that the Kuching Food Festival 2023 has welcomed a total attendance exceeding 300,000 visitors as of Friday (August 4).

Presently, the festival has seen up to 60,000 visitors per night, with the past two nights alone hosting nearly 20,000 tourists.

“With two more weeks left of the festival, we are hoping to break last year’s record of 80,000 visitors per night,” he said.
