Bicycle thief gets two months’ jail

KUCHING: A 25-year-old man was sentenced to two months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here today for stealing a bicycle.

Mohamad Azmin Parlan, 25, from Kampung Tabuan Tengah pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali ordered the accused to serve the prison sentence effective today (Apr 26).

According to the charge sheet, Mohamad Azmin was accused of stealing a Urata brand bicycle belonging to a 53-year-old man.

Mohamad Azmin committed the crime at the man’s house in Kampung Tabuan, at around 5 am, on April 24.

Upon conviction, Mohamad Azmin is liable to be sentenced to a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine.

Based on the facts of the case, on April 24, at around 6 am, the complainant’s younger brother informed that his bicycle which was placed inside the house was missing.

The complainant ordered his cousin and friend to look for the bicycle.

Later, his cousin told him that he saw a man known as Mohamad Azmin taking out a bicycle through the back of the house’s kitchen.

A police report made by the complainant led to the arrest of Mohamad Azmin on the same day.

Further investigations revealed that the accused confessed to stealing the bicycle and hiding it in the bushes in a jungle near the village.

It is understood that the price of the complainant’s bicycle is around RM600.

Prosecuting Officer Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case while the accused was not represented by a legal counsel.
