Let’s empower our youth in Big Data

MIRI: The State government through Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) is committed to empowering the youth in Big Data analytics and algorithm research to ensure that Sarawak leads the way into the future.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg assured that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government would transform the state into the age of Big Data analytics.

“The whole world is changing, it will be integrated into signal processing of Big Data and we must ensure our youngsters are ready,” he said when launching the SMA-Tegas Digital Innovation Hub (DIH) at Miri Times Square, Marina ParkCity yesterday.

Abang Johari added, for that reason, the State government was planning to establish an innovation centre in each division statewide.

“Some people say ‘Abang Jo’ is so ambitious! I don’t care, we just go ahead, once we have the infrastructures, we will be able to launch new products and enhance our economy,” he pointed out.

Abang Jo also recalled leading a delegation to United States in the early 1990s, for a convention and was later brought to ‘a home of future’ by the founder of Microsoft Bill Gates, where upon arrival at the house they were greeted by a robot that looks and acts like a human.

“The robot looks real, at that time we never thought that a robot could greet us like humans do,” he said.

Also present at the event were Tegas chairman Datuk Len Talif Salleh, State Secretary Datuk Amar Jaul Samion, Minister of Transport Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Abdullah Saidol and former deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Dr George Chan Hong Nam.
