BINTULU: Bintulu Hospital, which was built in 1994 and still operational, is no longer able to cater to the increasing population here.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian expressed his hope for the situation, especially the lack of parking spaces and facilities, to be resolved soon.

According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit report, the hospital’s visitor board member, Johnny Pang Leong Ming, who is also the Tanjung Batu assemblyman, had proposed for the construction of 205 parking spaces at a cost of RM500,000.

“It is a project that is needed by the people. Pang has delved into the people’s complaints and wants the matter to be resolved.

“Bintulu is experiencing rapid development, with key industries that require additional parking spaces and facilities,” Dr Sim said during a press conference at Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Tanjung Batu service centre here yesterday.

He disclosed that he would discuss with the Bintulu Hospital director and State Health Department on the proposal.

He added that he would also submit a proposal to build an additional section next to the hospital or to build a new hospital so as not to rely too much on the existing one.

On another note, Dr Sim, who is Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said two projects to overcome flood problems in Sungai Sebiew and Tanjung Batu would cost RM6.9mil.

“We will try to find funds to start the project as it is very important for us to solve the flood problems.

“This includes taking into account the sea level situation and people in the area, who have been facing flood problems for more than 20 years.”

Also present were Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting, Pang and other officials.
