KOTA SAMARAHAN: The government has approved the setting up of the Fire and Rescue Department’s (Bomba) Canine units (K9) in Sarawak and Sabah.

This was revealed by Bomba Director General, Datuk Wira Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim during a press conference after the closing ceremony of the state-level Integrity Empowerment Forum held at National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN) here, yesterday.

The K9 units, also known as ‘Unit Pengesan’ will be set up at the end of this year.

“Eight dogs and their handlers will be trained in four disciplines namely fire investigations, searches for survivors in urban disasters, searches for cadavers and tracking missing persons in the wilderness,” he said.

He added that a K9 unit had already been set up in Peninsular Malaysia in January, 2003.

Nor Ibrahim pointed out that Bomba was ready with its manpower and equipment to tackle any incidents or disasters in the country.

“If any incident becomes more serious, we will mobilise officers from Sabah and Sarawak or even from Peninsular Malaysia to assist,” he said.
